Title: Western Pacific Seamount Fauna
Price: Poster - $30, Postcard - $4
Size: Poster size – 20 x 28”, Postcard size – 4 x 6”
Medium: Strathmore Toned Gray Paper with Faber-Castell Colored Pencils. Edited in Krita program.
Description: Inspired by the 2024 Western Pacific International Cruise on the R/V Shen Hai Yi Hao, this is a collaboration between biologist Dr. Maëva Perez (Hong Kong Baptist University) and artist Dexter Davis (University of California Santa Barbara, CA). Explorations of the Magellan, Marcus-Wake, and Marshall seamount chains, revealed communities dominated by sponges, corals, and echinoderms. From 1400 to 6000m in depth, symbiotic relationships showed invertebrates living within and on top of these sponges and corals, providing habitat and greater access to the water column. These relationships are common in deep-sea habitats, but seamount biodiversity is relatively under-explored and poorly understood.
Extra details: This cruise is part of Digital Deep-Sea Typical Habitats (Digital DEPTH), a UN Ocean Decade program focused on exploration and research in deep-sea ecosystems including seamounts, continental slopes, abyssal plains, and mid-ocean ridges. From August to September of 2024, six seamounts were explored: DD, Ko-Hakucho, O-Yatagarasu, Matsuzaki, Alba, and Fedorov. Reference images were obtained from specimens collected with the human manned submersible Jiaolong. Many of these specimens appear to be new to science and are actively being identified.

HADAL CONTEXT
"The hadal zone - the deepest parts of our ocean - can feel distant and mysterious because of its extreme depth. But it’s deeply connected to our planet and full of unexpected beauty. Through this SciArt project, we aim to bring that hidden world to life by capturing what it feels like to descend into the deep sea in a submersible."
Title: Magnapinna
Medium: Linocut prints, water-based ink on Fabriano paper (Triptych). Three A5 lino prints, water based ink on Fabriano paper. All three of these prints are frames in the below animation “Magnapinna in Lino”.
Price: $80nzd ($47usd) - shipping to be arranged
Description: This triptych presents three selected frames from Magnapinna, a larger animated artwork created from a series of nearly thirty traditional lino prints. Developed through the collaboration between artist Frances Drader and deep-sea biologist Mackenzie Gerringer, the work explores the remarkable morphology and graceful movements of the elusive bigfin squid (Magnapinna sp.). Often seen as a scary deepsea monster, magnapinna, or the big fin squid, is an elegant, adorable and slightly mysterious creature that deserves our love much more than our fear.
While the website features three individual prints, they are part of an animated sequence that brings the full artwork to life. Visitors interested in seeing the complete animations and more of Frances Drader's work can explore her Instagram: @BeanSproutNZ.
Availability:
The original triptych is available for purchase. The animated works are not for sale but are available for exhibition opportunities.

DEEP SEA STORIES
Deep Sea Stories is a collaboration between Freya Hammar, a visual artist interested in ecological storytelling, and Dr. Beatriz E. Mejía-Mercado, a marine scientist at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. Together, they are blending art and science to visualize deep-sea ecosystems using real ecological data from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Size: 115 × 50 cm (45.3 × 19.7 inches)
Medium: Oil paint on wood
Description: With First Contact, I wanted to invite the viewer to look at the deep sea through the fresh and curious eyes of an explorer descending into the unknown for the very first time, perhaps even operating the ROV themselves. The work aims to capture that sense of wonder that arises when encountering an almost magical, otherworldly creature in an environment so often misunderstood as a barren wasteland. It is an invitation to remain curious and open toward this hidden world.

HIDDEN VOICES FROM THE DEEP
MERI & ARMANDO
Title: Hidden voices from the deep (the comic)
Price: $200
Size: 15cm x 19 cm (130g), 23 pages
Medium: Canson 100% cotton 300g/m2 watercolour paper, watercolours, Pigma Micron pens, thread
Description: Original and unique, hand painted and bound, comic-style story about life in the deep sea and the way it is explored. What stories hide in the absence of sound? Is the silence forced by our own biology, our inability to listen? This story slowly came to life as a product of a friendship that evolved over video calls during 9 months between Armando and Meri, as they shared stories and experiences, looking for a thread both could hold on to, and create together. This is the only physical copy of this piece made by Meri

Title: Hidden voices from the deep - the interactive prototype
Suggested donation: $10
Size: 15cm x 19 cm (130g), 23 pages
Medium: scanned pages of the Hidden voices from the deep (the comic), sounds and text by Armando
Description: Armando is very happy to share the first public prototype of ARTSEA with you. This is still an Alpha 0.1 version. Please use headphones if possible. Open the experience in a quiet environment. Take your time; there is no need to rush during the experience. This project is not meant to be read like a conventional website. Instead, imagine you are descending slowly into the deep ocean. As you scroll: the underwater soundscape changes, the atmosphere gradually transforms, the different chapters reveal fragments of the story. Some chapters include narration that can be played manually, while others start automatically as part of the journey. What he would love to know, rather than focusing on technical details is your thoughts about the overall experience.
